Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry

The Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry

Alaska’s history has often followed the path dictated by two opposing forces – the desire to exploit the natural resources, and the need for the technology and transportation to reach, process, and remove the products. At each step, Alaska’s development has been limited by the available technology and transportation of the day.

The Alaska of today was formed in a series of booms and busts. A new resource was found, the technology to exploit it became available, and the resource was exhausted. Gold and other resource exploration resulted in the development and use of railroads, roads, river steamboats, and (later) aircraft to serve the transportation needs. As the inevitable bust followed the boom, the technology of the day was left behind on the tundra and in the forests to rust and rot because it was too expensive and too impractical to remove.

MATI was established to give a home to the transportation and industrial remnants and to tell the stories of the people and the machines that opened Alaska to exploration and growth.

National Museum of Golf Cars

National Museum of Golf Cars

The county’s first museum devoted strictly to the preservation and education of the golf car and utility vehicle.

Learn about the history of the golf car, from its humble beginnings on the turf, to today where golf cars are no longer just for golf! Explore the restored and preserved content dating back to the early beginnings of the golf car from the 1950’s, to today, and even into the future with concept cars from manufacturers both long gone and still thriving.

Our growing collection includes custom, “one of a kind” golf cars built for celebrities and enthusiasts, very rare and restored golf cars and works of art from famous artists such as Kenny Scharf and Allison Goldenstein. Period pieces, video content, vintage photographs, tools, and components that display the history of the golf car.

As the oldest dealer of golf cars in the world, with a heritage dating back to the 1950’s, we feel it both a duty and an honor to preserve and educate future generations about the industry in which we are most passionate about.

Currently housed inside the Cart Mart Show Room in La Quinta, CA, the museum is seeking donations of content, a dedicated space to expand the collection, 501(c)(3) status and accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums.

This collection is a collaboration on many levels, with support from individuals, dealers and manufactures who believe in the preservation of golf cars and utility vehicles, and who wish to contribute to the further enhancement and education of our space.

Marine Corps Mechanized Museum

Located in Building 2612 on Vandegrift Blvd, the Marine Corps Mechanized Museum contains working Marine Corps transport and battle vehicles and interprets the history of Marine Corps vehicular usage from World War I (WW I) to the present day.

The building itself is an important piece of Base history, as it was the terminal building for the railroads that serviced the base shortly after its purchase in 1942. Many Marines arrived at Camp Pendleton at this terminal building to begin their training for World War II (WW II) and Korean War battlefields.

The Mechanized Museum collection includes an outstanding array of U.S. Marine Corps transportation and combat vehicles, from a WWI vintage ambulance to a Gulf War HUMVEE. The majority of vehicles in the collection are in running condition, thanks to the work of retired Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant Jim King and his hearty band of volunteers, aptly named “the Dirty Docents.”
