Rhode Island

Rhode Island, a U.S. state in New England, is known for sandy shores and seaside Colonial towns. It’s home to several large cities, including Newport, which is famed for sailing and Gilded Age mansions, such as The Breakers. Providence, its capital, is home to Brown University, green Roger Williams Park, landscaped Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, with the famed WaterFire art installation.

AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

In September 1896, the first automobile track race in America took place at the old Narragansett Park in Cranston. The race planned to run a series of five-mile races around a one-mile track over five days of the Rhode Island State Fair. The first day’s race was viewed by over 40,000 spectators. The starter called “now go – if you can!” One of the eight racers could not go, but the other seven took off. The crowd that day saw two electric cars defeat all the gasoline-powered vehicles.
