Best known for its elegant cars of the 1920s and 1930s, the Packard had its start in 1899 in Warren, Ohio when the Packard Brothers felt certain they could build a better car than the Winton, owned by their business partner George Weiss. The Winton, one of the earliest American cars, was built in Cleveland, Ohio starting in 1897. It is thought the first gasoline automobile ever publically sold was a Winton.
