KANSAS

Kansas is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka and its largest city is Wichita, with its most populated county being Johnson County. Kansas is named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which inhabited the area.

AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

Around the turn of the 20th century, many Americans were developing their own versions of a gasoline-powered automobile. One Kansan, Terry Stafford of Topeka, succeeded in building his own automobile in the spring of 1900. Stafford became chief engineer of the Smith Automobile Company in 1092. The Great Smith Automobile was a luxury vehicle made in Topeka during the early years of the automobile industry. The Smith Automobile Company produced well-built, dependable cars for ten years. A Great Smith automobile is in the collections of the Society’s Kansas Museum of History.
