COLORADO

Colorado, a western U.S. state, has a diverse landscape of arid desert, river canyons and snow-covered Rocky Mountains, which are partly protected by Rocky Mountain National Park. Elsewhere, Mesa Verde National Park features Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings. Perched a mile above sea level, Denver, Colorado’s capital and largest city, features a vibrant downtown area.

AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

History Colorado displays a rare part of early automotive history at the downtown Denver museum. The 1914 Fritchle electric car had a range of 60-100 miles on a single battery charge. It is thought to be the last existing car built by the Fritchle Automobile and Battery Company of Denver. It was the creation of Oliver Fritchle, a chemist, battery innovator, and entrepreneur. He produced several hundred electric vehicles. Fritchle even drove one of his electric cars from Denver to New York. The car did well on the trip, but finding places to recharge and navigating the early 1900 roads was a challenge. The car on display at the museum no longer runs, but it was driven there when the museum received it in the 1980s.
