Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed

Founded in 1992 by “Speedy” Bill and Joyce Smith, the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and displaying physical items significant in racing and automotive history.

The Museum of American Speed is a federally recognized 501 (c) (3) private foundation and currently encompasses more than 150,000 sq. ft. over three levels. The vast collection resulted from the Smiths’ personal involvement in racing and hot rodding for more than six decades, and their lifelong passion for collecting and preserving historic automotive artifacts.

Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum

In 1969, Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Jim Buck Ross, recognizing a need for the preservation of our culture and heritage in a tangible way, began collecting artifacts, organizing scholars, and laying a ground work for a museum. In 1978, the City of Jackson donated a valuable 39 acre site on Lakeland Drive and Interstate 55. This land could only be used for recreational purposes under specified stipulations of the State of Mississippi, which originally had owned the land. Funds from this appropriation were used to complete the structure itself and another $1.5 million was sought from the private sector by the non-profit Agriculture and Forestry Museum Foundation. The money raised by the foundation was used to construct permanent exhibits, a living history farm, an entire crossroads town, and a forest study area.

Covering more than 5,000 square feet, the National Agricultural Aviation Museum’s floor space and airspace provides a comprehensive and fascinating look at an industry that literally reshaped the history of agriculture. On display are actual planes that once flew over Southern farms and plantations complimented by an informative video and a series of colorful photographs and panels.

The exhibit barn, which has over 5,000 square feet of heavy timber construction exhibit space, features 10 antique tractors and 15 pieces of historical farm equipment. The exhibits inside the barn today depict for visitors how the mechanization of agriculture has progressed over the years.

La Porte County Historical Society – Kesling Auto Collection

The La Porte County Historical Society Museum has on display the Kesling Automobile Collection, which consists of more than 30 vintage automobiles collected by Dr. Peter C. Kesling and his wife Charlene. They range in age from a 1903 Winton to a 1982 DeLorean, the car made famous in the movie “Back to the Future.” The 1903 Winton was driven from California to New York City by Dr. and Mrs. Kesling in 2003, retracing the path of the first coast-to-coast auto journey by Dr. Horatio Jackson, one hundred years earlier.

The collection includes an important grouping of Indiana-built automobiles. A 1929 Auburn Cabin Speedster with T-tops recreates an original destroyed in a disastrous fire at the 1929 Los Angeles Auto Show. A classic Auburn Boattail Speedster of 1935 joins two Cords, a 1930 L-29 and a 1937 Model 812 “coffin-nose” model on display. Rounding out the Indiana triumvirate is a 1929 Duesenberg Model J.

Another highlight of the Kesling Automobile Collection is the 1948 Tucker “Torpedo,” number 12 of 50 produced by the innovative Tucker Corporation in Chicago. This car appeared in the 1988 movie “Tucker: The Man And His Dream” starring Jeff Bridges.

Brass Era enthusiasts will be pleased with the display of early automobiles. Besides the 1903 Winton, there is a 1910 Velie, a 1912 Baker Electric Coupe, and a 1914 Mitchell, among others. The Kesling Automobile Collection is on view with the La Porte County Historical Society’s museum displays. It is therefore included as part of the admission price and on view during Museum hours.
