New York

New York is a state in the Northeastern United States. New York was one of the original Thirteen Colonies that formed the United States. With an estimated 19.54 million residents in 2018, it is the fourth most populous state. To distinguish the state from the city in the state with the same name, it is sometimes called New York State. The state’s most populous city, New York City, makes up over 40% of the state’s population. Two-thirds of the state’s population lives in the New York metropolitan area, and nearly 40% lives on Long Island

AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

On April 25th, 1901, New York State became the first state in the US to require license plates on automobiles. Until sometime after 1903, New Yorkers had to obtain or create their own license plates. The plates did not originally have numbers but instead had the owner’s initials. New York did not recognize out of state plates, nor did New Jersey, requiring drivers to register their cars in each state they wished to drive in.
