E. Hayes and Sons

E Hayes and Sons is a family business. It is a company built around the strong family principles which our pioneering forefathers brought to Southland in the late 1800’s.

With them came a rich spirit of innovation, inventiveness and hard work which has grown in reputation, just as Southland itself has grown.

Since our earliest beginnings E Hayes and Sons have continued a proud family tradition of putting the needs of our customers first.

Our commitment to quality, service and expertise continues to underline that tradition providing leading Southland industries, trade customers and the general public with an extensive range of hardware, engineering and homeware products and services.
From tools, hardware, engineering, automotive, paint, chainsaws, powertools, lawnmowers, pumps and fasteners through to home ware, kitchen ware, gifts and workwear it’s a continually expanding range that must be seen to be believed.
But step inside the doors of our Dee Street store and you will soon see we are so much more than just a hardware store and engineering shop.

Proudly displayed throughout our store and FREE TO VIEW during normal shop hours, is an eclectic range of over 100 world-renown classic and vintage motorcycles, automobiles, engines, equipment and memorabilia which today makes up the E Hayes Motorworks Collection.

The collection is a legacy of a family passion for ingenuity, innovation and determination to go beyond the expected boundaries of convention and performance. Nothing demonstrates this more clearly than the centerpiece of the collection – Burt Munro’s Authentic, Original and Legendary record breaking “World’s Fastest Indian”

Classics Museum

The owner of the museum is Tom Andrews, he is a successful and hardworking Hamilton business entrepreneur, proud family man and lover of all things classic. Brought up in Melville he has lived here all his life. Tom decided he needed some more room to store his increasing collection of automobilia and classic cars.

One of Tom’s first money-making ventures was fixing up cars as a teenager. This sparked a passion for automobilia and he has collected hundreds of pieces of old car-related artifacts such as by-the-gallon glass petrol pumps and early 20th century enameled Texaco signs. Tom started off building a ‘shed’ to house his expanding collection as it had well and truly outgrown his home.

Classics Museum was the result and the museum now houses over 100 cars and is one of Hamilton’s top tourist attractions. Tom runs the Classic Car Museum alongside his daughters Emily and Toni and his wife Diane.

Canterbury Museum

Canterbury Museum is one of Christchurch’s most popular attractions, located in the central city next to the Botanic Gardens.

Entry is free and donations are appreciated. Learn about the natural history of Canterbury, the people who have made their homes here and our connection to Antarctica.

The Māori galleries display treasures and tools from our region’s first people. The Christchurch Street and Victorian Museum recreate the nineteenth-century city. Learn about the heroic explorers of the icy continent and see objects from the Museum’s internationally significant Antarctic collection.

Other highlights include the gold-plated motorcycle that belonged to world speedway champion, Ivan Mauger and displays of the now-extinct giant bird, the moa. At the world-famous kiwiana icon, Fred & Myrtle’s Pāua Shell House see more than 1,000 pāua shells, the most you’ll find in any one place. Children will love learning about the natural world in their own area, Discovery.

Southward Car Museum

Opened to the public in 1979, the massive Southward Car Museum has two showrooms displaying cars of all kinds, including a wide range of vintage vehicles by iconic car manufacturers, including Maserati, Porsche, Ferrari, and Bugatti. Many of the vehicles have their own stories, whether they were a gift to Hitler, a gangster’s ride riddled with bullets, or a DeLorean DMC-12 like the one in Back to the Future.

Beyond the cars, there’s Redhead, the boat that Sir Len drove at 101 mph (163 kph) in 1953, making it the first boat in Australasia to travel faster than 100 mph (161 kph). And the 14-acre (5.5-hectare) museum grounds, aka the Dell, offer a lovely pond, tranquil bushwalks, and ideal picnic spots.
