Sarasota Classic Car Museum Forced To Move

The Sarasota Classic Car Museum has been located on Tamiami Trail in Sarastoa, Florida since 1953. The 55,000 square foot building is the second oldest continuously operating antique car museum in the Nation.

But now, museum director Martin Godbey and museum Curator Blake Godbey were given a written notice on May 16, 2023, which terminates the museum’s lease.

The property is owned by New College of Florida wh has leased the property to the museum for the last 20 years.  Sarasota Classic Car Museum actually predates the college. The New College leadership is looking to replace the museum with a new athletic facility.

As of June 1, 2023 the New Collegeoard of trustees approved the plan to demolish the Palmer, Reichert and Knight buildings. This includes turning the car museum into a temporary space to accommodate student housing and other services displaced by the demolition.

Martin Godbey is still trying to get an extension from New College to give more time in an attempt to figure out what can be done with all of the museum’s artifacts. As of 1/9/23, Godbey has not been responded to and has until the end of June to vacate.

*UPDATE*

The Sarasota Classic Car Museum was able to negotiate more time with the New College and will remain open until October 2023 while they figure out a more reasonable exit plan.

American Muscle Car Museum

American Muscle Car Museum

Located in Melbourne, Florida, this new 123,000 square foot complex houses the collection of Mark Pieloch. Mark has been a car enthusiast for over 40 years and has amassed over 295 cars that range from classic 1950s to 1970’s American muscle cars, to modern “sophisticated” muscle like a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Convertible

The 501(c)3 museum, located on 42 acres in Melbourne, includes 90,000 sqft of vehicle display area, an 18,000 sqft showroom, and an adjacent 15,000 sqft maintenance and restoration facility for the collection. The private museum is located at 3500 Sarno Road. It is not open to the public but is open to hosting numerous non-profit fundraisers, car activities, and educational tours for school-age children.

The collection itself, in addition to the cars, has vintage balloon tire bicycles, auto-related neon signs, antique gas pumps, jukeboxes, pedal cars, vintage soda coolers, motorcycles, and more.

The main features of the collection are:

– More than nearly 50 Indianapolis 500 Pace Cars & Trucks

– More than 35 Shelby’s

– 29 Yenkos, at least one car for every make and model ever built, which makes it the most extensive Yenko car collection in the world

– Over 80 First Place National show winners

Within the car collection, there are 75+ cars with less than 100 original miles, 40+ cars with between 100 to 999 original miles, and 30+ cars with between 1,000 to 9,999 original miles. As you stroll through the Museum you will literally see the “Who’s Who” of American Muscle cars.

Dauer Museum of Classic Cars

When you enter the Dauer Museum of Classic Cars, over 55 classic cars transport you back to an age when Americans engaged in a more simple life. You’ll see beautifully restored cars from the 1930s to the 1970s. As you walk along you will pass a nostalgic mural of the “Fabulous Fifties” while Marilyn Monroe looks down on her cream-colored Cadillac convertible.

When you walk by the Florida Medical Center mural, you can admire the vintage ambulance, fully restored. The interior is still functional, complete with all the medical technology known during the 1970s. It even has a loud working siren.

You then enter the perfectly replicated Texaco gasoline station, circa 1934, complete with an authentic Texaco gasoline truck and 1930’s vintage gasoline pumps, together with original products from the time when Americans were well into their love affair with the automobile.

And there are more than just cars. With just a few steps you are transported into a Hollywood premiere of the 50’s complete with the luxury cars that the stars arrived in as well as beautifully restored vintage Black and White and Color video cameras that the movies of the past were filmed on.

The Brumos Collection

The Brumos Collection

From the main collection to interactive experiences that take you back to the early days of automotive design, racing, and the drivers themselves, the Brumos Collection is a walk-through automotive and racing lore you won’t soon forget.

The museum was designed to take guests through two unique experiences. The first section of the collection features open-cockpit racers and early automotive innovations, with the oldest being an 1894 Peugeot. Besides the cars, there are engines, vintage racing equipment, and drivers’ gear.

All of the cars have a kiosk that provides the car’s history, vintage photographs, and stat sheets detailing car specifications. The second area is full of Porsche race cars from 1953-2017. The cases in this section are filled with legendary race trophies and awards throughout the years.

From the cars themselves to trophies, pictures, engines, and more, you’ll find plenty of racing memorabilia. Seeing some of the older, more historical items will take you back to the time when early records were set by drivers who were attempting feats never accomplished before and the cars themselves were running at top speeds.

You’ll also get to see memorabilia dedicated to Brumos racing, beginning with Hubert Brundage and including the multiple 24 Hours of Daytona trophies. There are also cases dedicated to legendary racers, Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg.

If there’s one thing you to take away from your visit, it’s a newfound appreciation for the drivers, the mechanics, and the innovators who helped usher in such an exciting era in automotive racing and design.
