Foundation Auto Museum Volkswagen

The past becomes tangible, memories are revived, emotions are brought to life, historic automobiles set the pulse racing, and a marque with history has one thing over its competitors – its credibility based on many years of trust. The saying at Volkswagen – it goes on and on and on – from the Beetle era continues to apply to the Golf in the modern age.

Only a few hundred metres separate the past and the future here. The Volkswagen AutoMuseum is situated near the Volkswagen factory where the latest Volkswagen models are produced. On an exhibition space covering some 5,000 square metres, a total of 130 vehicles provide a fascinating insight into the product history of Volkswagen. Among the main exhibits are many rare concept vehicles, prototypes and one-off models.

The Foundation Auto Museum Volkswagen was officially born on 25 April 1985. That is the date on which the technically and historically significant collection curated by the Volkswagen Group – housed in a former clothes factory with a certain industrial charm – was first opened to the public. On 1 January 1992 the museum was converted into a non-profit-making foundation: the Volkswagen AutoMuseum Foundation. In spring 2001 – at the same time as the ZeitHaus museum opened in the Autostadt – the museum concept was revamped and the decision was taken to concentrate solely on the Volkswagen marque, further enhancing the attractiveness of the exhibition.

Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile

Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile

The National Automobile Museum (Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile) – MAUTO – is one of the oldest of its kind: it was founded in 1933, with a first exhibition of historic cars conceived by two pioneers of national motoring, Cesare Goria Gatti and Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffia. It was Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia (son of Roberto), an aristocrat born in Turin in 1879, who conceived it, imagined it, gathered the initial collection, fought to make it real and worked all his life to give it a dignified home.

Opened to the public in the autumn of 1960 in the premises designed by architect Amedeo Albertini, it was completely renovated and enlarged for the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy based on a project by architect Cino Zucchi. In 2011 MAUTO opens again, after four years of closed doors, with a new exhibition path set up by the French-Swiss scenographer François Confino, which effectively enhances the extraordinary car collection: two years later the Times ranks it among the 50 most beautiful museums in the world.

Along the way, the history of cars is told, the transformation from a mean of transport to an object that is  worshipped, from its origins to the contemporary evolution of creative thinking: the decisive passages of society are analyzed through the evolution of automobiles.

MAUTO today is a permanent exhibition path that houses an impressive collection: about 150 cars are on display, in addition to cars on a temporary loan. The remaining 60 cars in the collection are stored in an underground space, called the “Open Garage”, accessible only by reservation. To complete the museum itinerary, there is an exhibition area, which hosts temporary  exhibitions.

The museum area, of about twenty thousand square meters, welcomes over 200 thousand visitors every year. In addition to the permanent exhibition path, it includes other important activities. First of all, the Documentation Center, which is home to original documents relating to cars, protagonists, events that have made the history of the automobile industry: specifically, the Library has 9,000 monographs, of which about 50% owned exclusively; the Newspaper Library is a small treasure in which 800 automotive publications are kept, in all the languages of the world, 195 of which are owned only by MAUTO. Also, a small but precious collection of ancient books is an important part of the Library, which real rarities on the history of mechanics, physics and sciences between the sixteenth and nineteenth century.

British Motor Museum

British Motor Museum

The British Motor Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of historic British Cars; it boasts nearly 400 cars in its collection which span the classic, vintage and veteran eras.

Situated in the small village of Gaydon, Warwickshire, just off junction 12 of the M40. The Museum building is a spectacular piece of architecture with an art deco design, whilst the Collections Centre building is a modern contrast. Together they stand proudly in a beautifully landscaped setting of 65 acres, which rolls out onto the Warwickshire countryside.

THE MUSEUM STORY
The Museum opened in 1993 as the amalgamation of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust’s preserved car collection.

The Trust decided that the car collection and artefacts were outgrowing its then two locations, Studley in Warwickshire and a museum in Syon Park in London. A dedicated purpose-built residence was needed to give the collection pride of place and open for public viewing.

It was the Trust’s mission to keep the memory of the British motor industry alive and to tell its story to all, starting from the beginning of the 20th Century to present day. So a building was designed that not only housed the cars and its extensive motoring archive, but also had educational and conference facilities thus ensuring its sustainability. The Heritage Motor Centre, as it was first known, opened in May 1993.
