Gunnison Pioneer Museum

For thousands of years people have been pioneering into the Gunnison Country to make use of its many resources. Surrounded by some of the most impressive mountain ranges of the Colorado Rockies, getting into and making a life in the Gunnison Country has never been an easy feat, even with today’s technology. The Gunnison Pioneer Museum aims to preserve the history of those people that have come to Colorado and the Gunnison Country to make a life in the “middle of nowhere”.

The Pioneer Museum is located at the base the iconic ‘W’ Mountain along Highway 50 in Gunnison, Colorado. Some of the Gunnison Country’s most historic buildings, like the Paragon School House and Alonzo Hartman’s Post Office, now call the museum’s 14-acre campus their home. Thirty buildings house the Pioneer Society’s large and varied collection of donated objects from not only just the Gunnison Country, but from across the United States as well that demonstrate how times have changed and yet remained the same.

The Andy Mallett antique car museum building was constructed in the spring of 2000 in order to house a very prized collection of 90 antique cars. Mr. Andy Mallett’s donation, which he restored himself, originated in Delta, Colorado. In addition to Mr. Mallett’s collection are vehicles from the GunnisonThe Car Museum at the Gunnison Pioneer Museum area, donated or on loan from local residents.

Pontiac Transportation Museum

To celebrate the heritage and remarkable achievements of these many enterprises, the Pontiac Transportation Museum is being created to showcase examples of the cars, trucks, and other vehicles designed or built here – and the culture that truly changed the nation and the world.

The Museum will also honor the industrialization of this community and the many people whose work inspired these efforts. Through the museum’s existing and growing collections, we will endeavor—through displays, teaching, and community programs—to help educate and inspire young people to chart their own destiny in an increasingly technical world.

Museum of American Speed

Founded in 1992 by “Speedy” Bill and Joyce Smith, the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and displaying physical items significant in racing and automotive history. The museum is a federally recognized 501 (c) (3) private foundation and currently encompasses more than 150,000 sq. ft. over three levels. The vast collection resulted from the Smiths’ personal involvement in racing and hot rodding for more than six decades and their lifelong passion for collecting and preserving historic automotive artifacts.
