La Porte County Historical Society – Kesling Auto Collection

The La Porte County Historical Society Museum has on display the Kesling Automobile Collection, which consists of more than 30 vintage automobiles collected by Dr. Peter C. Kesling and his wife Charlene. They range in age from a 1903 Winton to a 1982 DeLorean, the car made famous in the movie “Back to the Future.” The 1903 Winton was driven from California to New York City by Dr. and Mrs. Kesling in 2003, retracing the path of the first coast-to-coast auto journey by Dr. Horatio Jackson, one hundred years earlier.

The collection includes an important grouping of Indiana-built automobiles. A 1929 Auburn Cabin Speedster with T-tops recreates an original destroyed in a disastrous fire at the 1929 Los Angeles Auto Show. A classic Auburn Boattail Speedster of 1935 joins two Cords, a 1930 L-29 and a 1937 Model 812 “coffin-nose” model on display. Rounding out the Indiana triumvirate is a 1929 Duesenberg Model J.

Another highlight of the Kesling Automobile Collection is the 1948 Tucker “Torpedo,” number 12 of 50 produced by the innovative Tucker Corporation in Chicago. This car appeared in the 1988 movie “Tucker: The Man And His Dream” starring Jeff Bridges.

Brass Era enthusiasts will be pleased with the display of early automobiles. Besides the 1903 Winton, there is a 1910 Velie, a 1912 Baker Electric Coupe, and a 1914 Mitchell, among others. The Kesling Automobile Collection is on view with the La Porte County Historical Society’s museum displays. It is therefore included as part of the admission price and on view during Museum hours.

The Buffalo Transportation/Pierce-Arrow Museum & The 1927 Buffalo Filling Station by Frank Lloyd Wright, Downtown Buffalo, 201 Seneca St. at 263 Michigan, near the Elm St. Exit, N6, of the I-190 NYS Thruway.

The Museum  (Non-Profit 501 (c) (3), features the extensive collection of James & Mary Ann Sandoro focusing on Buffalo’s transportation history highlighting Pierce-Arrow, Thomas Flyer, electric vehicles and automotive memorabilia, photos, paintings, art objects, vintage clothing, and an array of automotive artifacts gathered over more than 50 years of collecting.

“An ornament to the Pavement.”   The Museum expanded with an atrium that houses the Frank Lloyd Wright Filling Station designed for Buffalo in 1927 but never built. The unique station has a second-story observation room with a fireplace, restrooms, attendant’s quarters with fireplace, an extensive copper roof, two 45-foot poles that Wright called “totems,” and overhead gas distribution.

The Shed

The Shed is a Classic and Muscle Car Collection displayed in a 24,000 square-foot building located on Hwy. 11 West, next to Lake Country Chevrolet Buick in Warroad, MN. There are 99 cars available for your viewing enjoyment.

Because the Shed is a private collection, there are no set hours. If you’d like to take a tour, all you need to do is “call the house” at (218) 386-2485. Bob and Loralee are also listed in the Warroad phonebook. “If you get an answering machine, just tell us who you are, what day you’re going to be there and what time, and we’ll see that it’s open.” Or you can call Rick at (218) 242-1498. You can also take a chance and just show up, but if you do, the best time to stop by is in the afternoon or evening. There is also no admission. In lieu of charging an entrance fee, Bob and Loralee invite people to leave donations for the various causes they support. They are known throughout the area as being strong advocates and supporters of many activities and organizations such as the American Cancer Society – Roseau Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Awareness , the Warroad Veterans’ Memorial, and the Warroad Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

While visitors are welcome to come through for a quick tour, what Bob really gets excited about are the cars’ stories. Out of his collection, about 80 of the cars are considered unique – meaning they might be the first one off the line – like the white 1960 Corvette with the VIN number 000001 – be a prototype, or have a unique ownership history. If you want to hear the stories behind the cars, plan to stay for an hour and a half to two hours.
