ALASKA

Alaska, northwest of Canada, is the largest and most sparsely populated U.S. state. It’s known for its diverse terrain of open spaces, mountains and forests, with abundant wildlife and many small towns. It’s a destination for outdoor activities like skiing, mountain biking and kayaking. Massive Denali National Park is home to Denali (formerly called Mount McKinley), North America’s highest peak.

AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

Alaska’s first automobile was built by a love-struck 21-year-old, Robert E. “Bobby” Sheldon. He built a two-seat runabout in 1905 with the aim of winning the heart of a young lady. Amazingly, Sheldon had never seen a real car before but created his own from buggy wheels, bar stools, a two-cycle marine engine and some wood and tin using magazine pictures as a guide. Sheldon didn’t win the woman’s heart, but he did keep the car and became Alaska’s first automotive creator.
