Classic Car Collection

The Classic Car Collection is a gathering of 200 automobiles that is diverse and all-encompassing and illustrates the evolution and art of the automobile and its role in our lives.

The catalyst for the museum was the donation of 130 automobiles from Bernie and Janice Taulborg in 2011. The Taulborg Collection represented more than four decades of acquiring and restoring vintage vehicles of wide-ranging styles. The museum has since added several vehicles through generous donations from other owners, and it is these vehicles that create our permanent collection. In addition to the permanent collection, they typically display approximately 60 vehicles that are on loan to the museum from their generous owners. This group is regularly changing and evolving and will ensure a fresh display each time you visit the museum.

The museum has recreated a 1950’s gas station, with its vintage tools and more modern devices that show the progression of technical sophistication and how the technician has kept us on the road. You will also visit a Drive-In Theater display that incorporates the original vintage ticket booth from our local Kearney Drive-In. Other technological displays include various video screens showing historical footage and also recent events, our terrific ‘Car Hoods Project’ that uses large recreated car hoods as video screens for historical and entertaining footage.

The Automotive Collection includes several very rare and historic vehicles, including a one-of-its-kind 1938 Rolls Royce Wraith Limo, two Locomobiles, and three Pierce-Arrows. Also on display are two rare Lincolns from the Full Classic era, a 1930 Convertible by LeBaron which is one of 80 produced, and a 1930 Dual Cowl Phaeton which is one of only 20 produced. These are accompanied by similarly rare automobiles from Packard and Cadillac, Buick, and LaSalle.

The Classic Car Collection also has many rare marques, some that most have never seen before, like Moon, Gardner, Maxwell, Jewett, Gray, and Metz. Among these, you will find wonderful examples from Studebaker, Hudson, Mercury, and Chrysler. The Collection also showcases exquisite over-the-top 1950’s style, from the huge tailfins on a 1959 Cadillac to the stylish overload of an exquisite 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser and 1958 Studebaker Golden Hawk, and of course, the timeless Thunderbird.

The Muscle Car collection includes several rare Mopar cars, a very rare supercharged Shelby Mustang GT 350, and an early GTO. Sports cars are also on display from Ferarri, Porsche, DeLorean, Lancia, Bricklin, MG, and Triumph. Our 1930 MG Boattail Roadster, with its wood-framed, fabric-covered body is a wonderful historic look at the origins of the sports car.

Route 66 Car Museum is a privately owned car collection that is located along the famed and historic Route 66. Guy Mace started collecting in 1990 when he bought his first Jaguar. The collection has since grown to 75 automobiles that “strikes a fancy.”

Ranging from early brass era cars to vehicles used in cinema such as the Gotham Roadster, this collection is sure to have a vehicle for every museum goer’s taste.

The museum houses seven Jaguars, two Rolls Royces, a 1963 Morgan owned by Desert Storm’s General Norman Schwarzkopf, and the famous truck from the movie ‘Grapes of Wrath’ that starred Henry Fonda.

Several very unique classic cars are on display. Of note is the 1936 Horch, one of about 50 that were sold to the German government in 1937 for use by the military’s General Officers. This Horch won second place in the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Prewar Preservation Class. It is 100 percent original, having been stored for over 50 years in South Dakota. Two other classics in the collection, the 1933 Auburn 12, and the 1926 Kissel Brougham, both National First Prize winners of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA), represent the pinnacle of 1920’s and 1930’s classics, along with several other unusual cars on display from that era.”
